What to Expect

ACMI participants will be placed in chamber ensembles of various sizes and instrumentation. They will rehearse an assigned piece of chamber music with their coach for a series of sessions throughout the week. The Intensive experience includes group sightreading sessions, master classes, faculty presentations, and casual concerts. At the end of the course, the ensembles perform in a recital.

(Amy’s thoughts: The word “workshop” came up with my colleagues last semester, and people said it reminded them of a woodworking class or similar. I wonder if this is a generational thing! But I like the word Intensive for this week/course/workshop!)

Repertoire & Schedule

Participants will be assigned to groups, and repertoire will be decided six to eight weeks before the Intensive. Assignments are based on individual playing level and prior chamber music experience. All repertoire and ensemble requests will be granted where possible. All participants are encouraged to learn their parts in advance to maximize the experience during the Intensive. Throughout the course, a variety of activities and presentations will be scheduled. We encourage participants to attend as many of these as possible.

Group Coaching:

We welcome applications from partially formed groups, and will make every effort to match you with a musician to complete your ensemble.

  • Four group coaching sessions are required.
  • Schedules for the coaching sessions will be coordinated around the availability of the participants and coaches.
  • If you would like the coach to play in your group, we will do our best to accommodate this request.
  • We welcome applications from partially formed groups, and will make every effort to match you with a musician to complete your ensemble.

“The coaches are world-class musicians and people, and the participants are friendly, eager to learn, and excited to make music. It is one of the best chamber ensemble workshops out there for learning more about a particular piece, your ensemble skills, and your own playing abilities.”
